Youth 2 Youth Program Updates

Over the past month the ONE Voice Youth to Youth empowerment groups have been very busy. And with Prom Night right around the corner, the groups are gearing up with some new programs.

The Youth to Youth team in Somersworth conducted a prescription drug campaign where students set up 168 gravestones around the school cafeteria. The number, 168, is significant because that is how many deaths are attributed to prescription drug abuse every year in New Hampshire.

With Prom night around the corner, students have the opportunity to buy Prom tickets at a reduced price by attending a Guest Speaker Event with their parents. The speaker at the event will be Kathi Meyer. She will be talking about the consequences of underage drinking. This presentation will take place at Somersworth High School on May 5th at 7:00 PM, everyone is welcome.

Also getting students to think more responsibly on prom night, the Rochester Youth to Youth team is creating “tux cards” with an alcohol related message. Local businesses are helping out by including these cards with their tux rentals during the prom season.

The Coe Brown team is trying to show students that underage drinking has real consequences by working with the school to revise one of their policies. The policy would state that any student who gets into trouble with alcohol off school grounds will have their parking privileges revoked.

In addition, the Farmington Youth to Youth team has recently carried out a presentation on the “8 things the alcohol industry won’t tell you”.

One assignment that all teams participated in was the alcohol sticker shock project. This project involved the students working with local businesses that sell alcohol. The students put stickers on cases of beer educating adults that the most common way kids get alcohol is by taking it from their home or the home of a friend. The sticker encourages adults to monitor their alcohol and make sure to keep it out of the hands of kids. All teams also got to show off their creative and technical skills by creating a variety of radio public service announcements. All of the announcements can be found on the ONE Voice website at http://onevoicenh.org/media.htm.
